Integration with a handheld device to do barcode scanning is an excellent way to save time and streamline the work flow process in InventoryDirect! When it comes to purchasing a scanner, SchoolDude is often asked for recommendations. We do not officially endorse a specific brand or model; our recommendation is always just to make sure it has WIFI capability (and a WIFI signal in the warehouse) and that it’s rugged enough to withstand being used in the warehouse.
Recently though I had the opportunity to work with a client who was implementing InventoryDirect at their school and planned to use it so their maintenance crew could quickly and easily associate the parts they used on a work order. Not only did they want to integrate their work orders and consumable inventory processes, they also wanted to take it a step further and integrate with handheld devices to leverage the barcode scanning capabilities. After listening to their goals, I decided to investigate an alternative solution to the traditional “barcode scanner”, that I’ve been hearing about over the last year or so, iCody.
iCody is a cost effective solution for schools that have already issued smart phones to their employees. It’s a downloadable app that costs less than $10. Once I downloaded the app to my phone, it was super easy to navigate and use! Essentially iCody allows me to log into InventoryDirect Wireless via the app. Once I was logged into IDW I could quickly and easily create an issue transaction tied to the work order by entering the WOID, selecting the Inventory pool, and then scan the item’s barcode. Scanning the barcode was as easy as tapping on a barcode icon inside the cell I wanted, and from there the app read the code and did the rest.
Overall I was thoroughly impressed with the ease of use of iCody and think it is a great option for our clients!
