I've worked on the marketing team at SchoolDude since 2013. I currently am the Public K-12 Marketing Manager and serve the Public K-12 market with helpful resources and trends that can help them in their day-to-day work. John Dufay, the Executive Director of Support Operations with Albuquerque Public Schools in New Mexico, recently released his annual Maintenance & Operations 2014 Year-End Report. John has been providing this report for 6 years and has been with his district for over 25 years. What was John Dufay’s impetus for beginning his annual M&O report? He believes it is important to share operations data (the good, the bad, and the ugly) to help Supervisors, the Board, and the public better understand the workload of Support Departments and how it benefits the learning environment. John believes this data provides:
John discussed many topics helpful to districts and schools of all sizes in this week’s
webinar, but we want to focus on his take on preventive maintenance (PM). Albuquerque’s PM efforts have saved the district millions of dollars over the years. First John explains why his team put a focus on PM:
"PM is important to extend the lifecycle of equipment beyond what was predicted when it was brand new. PM also helps budget for the future if you know an expensive equipment item will last 20 years, you can put budget dollars aside over time for replacements."
However, he has an interesting take on the time it takes to see the return on investment with PM:
"Starting our PM program was difficult because it required buy-in to use the same budget and add in a new initiative. The size of the pie was the same, but now PM is a larger slice. You have to make a commitment to stay the course because the benefits for us didn’t start until year 3."
So what tangible benefits has Albuquerque seen since implementing their PM program? John reported:
While starting preventive maintenance was an uphill battle for John, the benefits have been tremendous!
