Cutting costs is top of mind for most school administrators. Interestingly, energy consumption is one of the top manageable spending items in a school’s budget, and heating and cooling of facility space accounts for a large percentage of the consumption. Administrators, therefore, can look to reducing energy consumption first to cut costs at their educational institutions.
One option for schools looking to reduce HVAC system costs is to retrofit the entire system. This can be time consuming and expensive. Another option is adding a monitoring device to a school’s legacy equipment. These devices monitor temperature levels and energy consumption to identify what zones are consuming the most energy. The data collected provides a starting point for developing and implementing an energy conservation program, but it can take months to collect the necessary data.
Want to start conserving today? A third option to reduce HVAC costs is to have your maintenance team manually turn off each facility space in your schools that are not in use, wasting valuable man-hours…OR You could invest in a solution that integrates with your HVAC controls to automatically turn off the system when facility space is not in use. SchoolDude’s FSAutomation, integrates with FSDirect, a web-based facility scheduling tool, to automatically schedule HVAC and lighting at the time needed in facility spaces approved for use in FSDirect. Wayne-Westland Community School District has seen great savings through automating its HVAC system with FSDirect and FSAutomation. The energy management supervisor has seen an 11% reduction in energy usage and a time savings of 30 minutes per day for the staff that no longer has to manually override the system.
“With my time-savings, I can focus on things that will have a lasting impact on the schools and improve energy conservation.” --Nicholas Thornton, energy management supervisor
