Energy costs are often one of the largest costs to districts outside of personnel costs. Getting energy costs under control can be a large undertaking but important to cost savings for school districts. Boone County Schools in Kentucky was looking for budgetary relief, and found it with a successful energy conservation program.
The district tracks energy usage with UtilityDirect and hired an energy manager to implement an energy conservation program. Cathy Reed, the district’s energy manager, utilizes the rich data in UtilityDirect to determine areas of focus that can save the most on utilities. Some projects Boone County has implemented include:
Smart HVAC settings, such as turning temperatures down over winter break which saved $40,000 for the district over a two-week period
Computer power management to shut down computers after hours
Schools can determine where most of their energy and utilities are being used and track changes in usage and costs through SchoolDude’s UtilityDirect, an energy tracking and management solution. Boone County has saved almost $1 million so far with tracking its utility data and using that to make operational and equipment changes throughout its schools.
