Denver Public Schools is preparing to spend millions to install battery operated door locks on every classroom, according to a recent article in The Denver Post. As they go out for bond, Denver Public Schools is just one of the many districts across the U.S. constantly thinking about how to continually improve school safety with scalable initiatives.
With the prevalence of school shootings in recent years, states are passing security mandates for public schools. As a result, schools are beginning renovations to handle security upgrades, such as vestibules or automatic classroom locks. Additionally, maintenance issues can affect the safety of a school. One example the article points out is school districts with deferred maintenance on equipment or building components. For example, If the HVAC is not working properly, teachers may prop open their doors to cool their students, but that compromises the ability to automatically lock a door for safety. Ongoing maintenance deficiencies as well as lacking technology can disrupt safety initiatives.
