I've been a member of the SchoolDude marketing team for over 3 years, and I work with Independent schools and Higher Education institutions. I’ve lived in North Carolina my entire life, but don’t have much of an accent – at least I don’t think I do? I attended NC State University and earned my degree in Communication. I'm active in several clubs within in the community. On the weekend, you’ll find me downtown testing out new restaurants, volunteering or dancing at a local concert.
As colleges and universities work hard to keep tuition low, facilities managers are being asked to do more with less. You know that your campus is the best recruiting tool your institution has, so how can you keep costs down while still keeping the campus in tip-top shape? An article in APPA’s Facilities Manager, “7 Facilities Maintenance Practices Costing You Money,” identifies 7 areas to focus your time and energies on which will lead to the biggest impact. We have picked 3 areas that we find to be especially important – stay tuned over the coming weeks to learn more about these topics.
Part 1 - Error of Omission
We live in a data-driven world, and the data that can be found within a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) provides a powerful management and productivity tool. That being said, many institutions fail to utilize the full power of their system. As mentioned in APPA’s article, “If your staff is not fully utilizing this tool, you are not getting the full value from your technology investment. Worse, it might mean that you have blinders on when it comes to some critical information about how you and your team are performing.”
Help your staff understand the importance of good data by regularly sitting down as a team and discussing your department’s key performance indicators (KPIs) together. This gives the team more ownership of their work. The data out of your CMMS can help increase accountability of your team and recognize successes.
Wondering what KPI’s you should be reviewing? Here are a few that we suggest looking at regularly.
