Stephen Brackett is the Maintenance Supervisor for Carbondale Elementary School District #95 in Carbondale, IL. Despite being surrounded by farms in southern Illinois, Carbondale is inside city limits and has 4 school buildings, 120 staff, and 1,300 students and growing.
When Steve started his job at Carbondale he had drawers full of loose leaf paper work orders with no time to organize or prioritize. Most of his staff felt overwhelmed because they were just reacting to emergencies on a regular basis. Clients would stop them in the hall or give work orders to the busy secretary who would write them down and give them to a courier. It would take three days to reach the maintenance office.
“Those lost hours translate into dollars. SchoolDude can streamline that process, getting work orders to maintenance in minutes,” said Steve.
After struggling to keep up with the pace for far too long, Steve finally convinced his Assistant Superintendent to join him for the FacilityMasters conference to take a look at SchoolDude. “Not only was he impressed with facility scheduling and community use, but the business officers were also excited to see how it can help manage technology assets such as printers and overhead projectors,” said Steve. Carbondale ultimately selected SchoolDude because, unlike competitors, it is a cloud-based solution that can work on any type of computer, including a MAC.
Throughout the implementation process, Steve found SchoolDude easy to use after minimal training sessions.
“Training was easy to understand which helped me roll out the implementation quickly. I didn’t have to call SchoolDude every time there was an issue, but if I did there was an easy fix,” said Steve.
In just a few short months, Steve is already seeing the benefits. Faculty and end-users are now putting work order requests through SchoolDude, eliminating hallway interruptions.
“We put the ball in their court and if they take two minutes to enter the work order, then we know it is important,” said Steve. Steve can better prioritize work orders with his time savings. His team is also feeling less rushed because there are less emergencies.
SchoolDude enables Carbondale to better track work orders, which will in turn track their spending. The maintenance team also uses SchoolDude’s tracking and reporting to show accountability, justifying where staff time is spent and how long various requests take to complete. Steve looks forward to using the data in SchoolDude’s reports to help justify hiring additional maintenance staff in the future.
