This question often comes in waves, and it's surf's up! If you are considering a barcode or QR code scanning device only for use in SchoolDude, this is for you.
If you can use an existing laptop, tablet or smartphone, consider these options:
Barcode/QR scanners in the current SchoolDude world are a data entry mechanism similar to using a keyboard for entering information such as an Item ID.
I was able to create supplies in InventoryDirect via my iPad by scanning a barcode for the item ID and used the tablet's voice-to-text capability to save my fingers from typing an item’s description.(tip from using some scanners: scan the barcode last)
If you create your own Item ID in InventoryDirect (that becomes a barcode), take caution with certain special characters. This can limit functions such as searching on webpages. Example Item IDs:
Get data provided from vendors to build a database instead of re-inventing any wheels. Tests with Grainger data was excellent to use in InventoryDirect as that allowed me to scan either their item number or my item number to "Receive" supplies.
