Most school districts have Board policy and procedures that allow facilities to be rented out when they are not required for instruction. In my experience, the level of community use within a district is most often a result of an external individual or group interested in using an area or space at a specific school. Generally, the total amount of revenue, or “cost recovery” is controlled by the availability of specific space and the associated fee structure.
I am interested in learning more about school districts that have been successful at increasing the overall amount of annual cost recovery by taking a proactive, rather than the traditional reactive approach to renting out their school facilities. What are they doing differently? How do they collect information regarding the spaces available for rental, and how do they share the information with the public?
