After Columbine, our district instituted a program to post room numbers on classroom windows so that emergency responders could locate specific classrooms from outside the building. I recently attended a security seminar hosted by Michael Dorn who is considered to be a leading expert in school safety. He recommends that schools should avoid what he calls “target identifiers” that may lead an assailant directly to their intended victim. So which is best? I would like to hear more from those of you that have considered this issue. With due respect to Mr. Dorn, I believe that posting classroom numbers in classroom windows makes sense. We are currently in the process of verifying on site, the building layout drawings provided to emergency responders to make certain that all posted room numbers are correct.
