Lynchburg City Schools recently completed our first school year with a crew on 2nd shift. We went from having a crew that either worked from 7:am -3:30 pm, or 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, to coverage in the schools from 6:00 am until 8:30 pm (2nd shift being 12-8:30) .
The result was a huge increase in the amount of work we were able to get done in a timely manner. Changing ballasts or filters in a classroom is no longer a struggle. There are many fewer disruptions to the schools. We added 4 new positions and moved 2 additional positions to 2nd shift when people retired. We did not force anyone to change shifts but rather hired for the shift. As positions become available we will probably move those positions to 2nd shift as well.
The management end has become a little more complicated and fast paced. Work orders seems to be constantly released throughout the day, and the communication between shifts has to be good, but overall I see nothing but good things coming out of the change. There will always be a need for a 1st shift, but as far as production goes, it's hard to beat an empty building!
